Road Trippin' - Fingerpicking for Beginners Part 3

James Stelling May 6, 2020

Here it is. Part 3: Road Trippin’ by Red Hot Chili Peppers from their 1999 album Californication

This piece combines elements of the picking patterns we learnt in Part 1 & Part 2.

I’ve recorded the Bass and the Guitar so let’s take a listen below.

Here’s the TAB & Notation:

This piece isn’t so tricky once you slow it down and focus on the fingerpicking pattern.

Because of the Baug chord we’re technically in E Harmonic minor territory for those of you who care about stuff like that.

I’d start with learning the pattern used on the Em chord and then graduate onto the other two chords once you’re comfortable and it’s not requiring too much thought for you to execute.

As a quick aside, I always heard the first note as being a pickup (probably because Flea comes in on beat 2 - the ‘& of 1’ if you count it at 102bpm) but it’s not, it’s beat 1 - feels weird to me. Because of this I’ve included the recording plus a click track below as a reference.

Below are a few more resources to help you practice with and get this piece up to speed. Enjoy!

All of these resources are made for free and they do take considerable time & effort.

Thanks so much, James.

Use this if you’re having trouble lining up the guitar part with the bass part.

Use this if you’re having trouble separating what the guitar is playing from what the bass is playing.

Use this to cross reference the TAB & Notation and to help get the guitar part in your ears. I’m a huge advocate of slowing things down. It really makes a difference.

Use this to practice playing the guitar part with the bass once you’re comfortable with it. This loops the bass part around for 3x longer than the original.
